THEME 5: - DAY 1 - 16 October 2019 - SESSION: LOCATING HEALTH CARE WORKERS: INTERFACE OF HEALTH SYSTEM AND COMMUNITY
Keeping in mind the larger objective of this there, to bring health care workers to the centre stage of discussions on social accountability, the first session would be devoted to mapping health care workers in a global context. Since health care workers represent a wide canvas, the theme consciously chooses to focus on those sets of workers who engage with community directly on provision/facilitation/promotion of health care. While it is well acknowledged that health care workers globally share similar challenges more so in the current policy environment of SDG/UHCs, the increasing complexity of the spaces they occupy in different country contexts is yet to be fully understood. This session hence would begin with offering a nuanced understanding of who are these health care workers and how are they located in the health system vis a vis the community which has an implication on reengaging with Werner (1981)’s concern about lackeys or liberators/health workers as mere service providers or agents of change.
